The Fitzgerald Building--fondly referred to as “The Fitz” for it’s namesake Captain Fitzgerald—is located in Port Tampa (7101 Kissimmee Street, SW corner of Kissimmee & Loughman), this two-story building was one of only two business buildings, along with the Brick Corner, to survive fires in 1908 and 1910. For a time, this was the home of the post office. It was a small store when Albert F. Delbaugh bought it from G.O. Buie. Delbaugh enlarged it and moved the Keystone Market here from Davis' Corner. The store closed in 1940. Across the street on the southeast corner was the Willis Building, erected in 1900.
The Fitz was recently recognized by Reclaiming Our Heritage.org and the American Institute of Architects of Tampa Bay as one of most vulnerable heritage structures in the region. As the “face” of the Preservation Ten, the little Fitz is a tug at the heart for preservations, architects, and good-hearted and well-heeled folks interested in restoring a historic structure as a home or office.
